What is Rekeying and Why Do It?

Rekeying

Rekeying is the process of altering a lock so that it uses a different key. This is different from changing a lock because it that situation, the entire lock and accompanying hardware is completely removed and replaced. In rekeying, new keys are made and the existing lock mechanism is reset so that it will only open with the new keys.

The interior cylinder of a lock contains a series of upper and lower pins. When you insert a key into the lock, it pushes the pins into alignment, enabling you to open the door. To rekey a lock, a locksmith replaces the lower pins with ones that fit perfectly along the ridges of the new key. This way, only that key will unlock the door, even the old lock is still in place. It is a simple process that takes a skilled locksmith only minutes to accomplish.

Rekeying is recommended for security reasons any time you move into a new home, apartment or office space. Prior residents or tenants could have made duplicate keys without your knowledge and could easily enter any time they wish. This is also a wise precaution for business owners who have fired an employee who had access to company keys.

Proper lock installation

Losing keys is another good time to have your locks rekeyed. If a criminal picked up your house key and somehow managed to learn your address, (for example, this could happen if a woman loses her entire purse containing all her identification along with her keys), your valuables and personal safety could be in jeopardy.

Many people choose to rekey locks as a matter of convenience. An unlimited number of locks can be rekeyed to use the same key, effectively creating a master key that can be used to open all of your doors.

The option to rekey locks offers an excellent alternative to changing them out entirely. It can be done more quickly at a fraction of the cost. For your security, have the work done by a professional locksmith to ensure proper installation.
